Helpful Tips.
  • To make your search more specific, you can type in more than one word. Google treats multiple-word searches as 'and'-type searches, returning information relating to all words entered in the search field.

  • If you're trying to find something relating to an exact phrase, you can search for the phrase by putting it in quotation marks - for example, "World War I" or "by any means necessary".

  • Using the operator "OR" (capital letters required) in a search returns information relating to either searched term. For example, doing a search for "roy OR parenti" returns information that may relate to Arundhati Roy, Michael Parenti, both of them, or maybe even a recipe by Rachel Roy for mashed potatos or something.

  • When searching for a term and also its synonyms, use a tilde ( "~" ) in front of the searched term. For example, a search using "~coalitions" will return information relating to coalitions, and also to alliances, unions, or other related terms. (note: when using tilde signs in a search involving more than one term, be sure to include a space before each tilde)

  • If your search term has multiple references (for example, "Hiroshima" could refer to the city in Japan, or the LA-based jazz-fusion music group), you can get more relevant results by placing a minus sign (-) in front of words relating to results you want to avoid. For example, here's how you'd search for info relating to Hiroshima (the city) but not to the band: "Hiroshima -band" (note: when using the minus sign in a search, be sure to include a space before the minus sign)
